I’m so stoked to share this interview with you, because it moulds 2 of my most favourite topics – Weddings and Facebook.

I thought it would be fantastic to show my fellow business owners exactly what is possible with a Facebook page geared towards the wedding industry. Here, Estee Ferreira owner of Wedding Connexion and the Wedding Planning page on Facebook has gained nearly more than 140 000 fans.

What is the last book you read?

I have 2 daughters- so it was beauty and the beast. I don’t really get time to read books myself. I haven’t finished reading a book in over 5 years. I start but never make it past the first few pages. If I’m not working in my boutique, I’m doing the Facebook maintenance, or other admin. I’m also an accountant so I do need to read all the tax manuals etc. to keep up to date with those changes. But my spare time I rather spend doing stuff with my daughters.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? 

Sleeping beauty- I think I could do with a few days of just sleeping.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?

Reese Witherspoon – I think she has such a cute personality
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

To fly- if I could fly to fetch my dresses in America- I would save a fortune

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

What ignited the spark in you to start your Wedding Planning Facebook page?

I had just started my boutique the Wedding Connexion, and needed to find the best way to get my name out there. I started with all forms of advertising but none had the response I wanted. I then created a Facebook page, Wedding Connexion- but found that people joined the page but never really interacted so decided that I needed to start something that is wedding related that is interactive. I spent a lot of time reading forums etc and then decided the brides enjoy chatting to each other so let me start the wedding planning page, they can chat, show photos etc and I can show dresses etc.
When did you create your Facebook page?

August 2009
How did you decide what you were going to post about when you first started out? 

I spent time reading on the forums the types of thing brides were looking for- which seems to be what do you think of these colours together, so I started putting together albums with the different colour options.
How do you plan for your posts?

It is mostly things I get emailed to post- brides often email saying what they would like to see
What advice would you give new businesses out there who would like to create successful Facebook pages?

Keep your audience interested by being interactive. Everyone loves free things even if it is small, so do give aways and competitions. Spend time on it- it doesn’t happen over night
What’s been your favourite part of growing your page to the size it is today?

I love the positive feedback from the brides, they come into the shop and they all chatting to each other, girls that don’t even know each other and they chatting about stuff they saw on the page
What are your favourite wedding blogs?

I read celebration.co.za blog quite often and recently I have started reading yours as quiet interested in your blogs on social media.

What have you learnt from having a successful Facebook page?

I have learnt that social media is a great form of advertising but also you need to up your personal security on your personal page. Everyone adds you as a friend, and the one day I was moving people I never knew to acquaintances, when I saw that someone had my dog as their profile picture- which to me was weird.
How do you build your page and gain fans? 

At first I did facebook ads, and referrals from friends and past brides. The monthly bride of the month also grows the page quite nicely.

Has your Facebook page positively impacted the success of your business? 



Every day I post up my album with what is in stock or what is on sale- which gets a lot of people into the shop. My shop sales have doubled every year since I have opened, which about 90% of those sales are brides from my facebook page. I work closely with a store in cape town so I get a lot of cape town sales as well. We also get quite a lot of sales to the neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe , Zambia and Namibia, which are all facebook related.
