We’re officially in full swing with 2020, and if you’re a solopreneur/freelancer/creative like me, then you’ve been doing your reflections on the year that’s past and setting your intentions for the year that lies ahead.
It’s astounding to see what’s possible in a year, when you really take the time to notice, don’t you agree?
Our brains are such strange and interesting organs that mold and warp our memories, which is why I’ve always loved being a photographer – to solidify in my mind and the minds of my clients, the experiences and transformations of past journeys.
It’s only when we really look back and see who we were then, that we realise who we’ve become now.
So think for a moment – think of the woman you’re going to be a year from now, 2 years from now? How will you have grown, and shifted and impacted your life and the world? With all the bright sparkly intentions you’ve set for 2020, what monumental expansion waits for you?
What monumental expansion waits for you?
I’ve seen it time and time again – in myself and my clients. Each time we capture a moment of ourselves along our journey, our perception of ourselves is forever changed. Over the years portrait photography has guided me into the realms of personal expansion in far more ways than I ever knew existed at the time I chose to focus solely on this particular genre. Now I see why. Now I see the impact. Now I see my purpose.
Just take a look a Maria, who came for a photoshoot in 2017 before she left the ‘safety’ of corporate employment. Fast forward to the end of 2019, where she’s set to take her individually owned enterprise, global!
As I searched my old Facebook posts to find these images, this is what I wrote at the time of Maria’s first shoot, back in 2017…
This shoot was for Maria, as most shoots are for my clients, a milestone to signify a current or impending career or life transition.
These photo shoots, whether intended for business or personal purposes, often become the catalyst that affects change for my clients on their individual journeys.
I think it’s because they see themselves differently through this process. A shift in their self perception happens during the shoot. And when their perception changes, their reality changes.
It may be an uncomfortable shift, but that’s ok. Things can only change and get better when there’s a dash of discomfort.
I count myself extremely honoured to play a small role in the development journey of all the women I get to meet and photograph. Each one of them teaches me about business, about life and about myself.
I never knew the depth of learning and growth that could come from following my purpose. Even when uncertainty is a constant companion.
Do you see your purpose?
What purpose of yours is waiting for you to catch up to it.. to fulfill it? What are you putting off until that moment you ‘feel ready’?
Let me share something with you that I’ve learned in the 13 years I’ve been a solopreneur – now bear in mind, it’s not ground-breaking and its not new – but it’s a reminder that’s worth repeating – You’ll never ‘feel ready’.
Being ready happens on the go, while you’re doing the thing you’re not ready for. So if you’re waiting for the ‘ready’ bus, sorry honey, it ain’t comin’.
So best you start now. Your purpose won’t wait around forever, you know. If you don’t action it, it’ll move on to someone else who will.
This was a concept that I was first introduced to by Elizabeth Gilbert in her book Big Magic. She speaks about how inspiration is not ours to own, but is instead a visitor who shows up and invites us to play. But if we’re not willing to play, it moves on to the next person who’s already being playful. And so… our moment with inspiration passes us by.
I had this exact experience just this week.
I’ve been saying that I’m going to write a book about confidence for the past 2 years. I started it at the beginning of 2018 and got as far as 12000 words. Then life happened, my Confident Creative Academy happened, and I haven’t looked at that book since.
I’m currently reading another book I’d ordered late last year and have really been enjoying. This week, as I was reading over my breakfast cereal, it got to a point about the 4 C’s of confidence. As I read the pages, I got goosebumps, because these were the exact C’s that I’d thought up for my book back in 2018 before this book I was reading, even existed!
And so my realisation – the inspiration wasn’t gonna wait around for me forever!
My own 2020 Personal Brand
So I’ve gotta walk my talk, right? I can’t be telling you what to do, if I’m not doing that for myself.
My intention for my personal brand in 2020 is to become more visible – ie. creating more of my own portraits and sharing them along with the portraits I create for my clients.
I’m going to be bringing more of my other passions that expand beyond my love for photography, like my love for nature, veganism, the workings of the mind and my love for travel and adventure.
And finally, I’m intending for my personal brand to be more visible on video in 2020, more consistently. And with more intention about the aesthetic of the video, not like my Video A Day challenge I did back in 2018. KMN!
With all of this intentional showing up and being seen, I’m committing to becoming the kind of business woman who through her own work, inspires and impacts other women to do theirs, while making one heck of a fortune while we’re at it – so that we can be generous in uplifting the women and animals in the world who need an extra helping hand. And while I’m at it, I choose to be the voice for us ‘middle-aged’ women – 35 and over – to show us all that we’re still relevant, we’re still sexy as hell, and we’re the real impact-makers of the world!
