It must be about 3 years ago when I did a portrait shoot session for Mel Jones. I’d initially met her at a local radio station a year or so prior, but hadn’t personally connected with her until she was MC-ing an event I was attending. At the time I was still building a portfolio for my women’s portrait photography and I remember being petrified at the thought of walking up to her and asking her if I could photograph her. What if she said no? What if she laughed in my face? Of course, I had nothing to fear, because Mel was, as she always is, a gracious and humble woman.
I’m really piling on the cringe factor now as I remember WHERE I photographed Mel. At the time I didn’t have a studio – I’d been shooting the few volunteers I had in my bedroom! I’d identified that I couldn’t continue like that, so I’d made an agreement with a hair salon owner that I’d shoot in a corner of his salon. At the time it felt like a step up from the bedroom, but now that I think about it, it couldn’t have been more awkward for my clients. Thankfully I’ve moved on since then, but Mel was one of those few who took up the challenge of being photographed at a hair salon!!
She was amazing then and she’s even more amazing now. We’ve stayed in touch ever since, and every time I meet up with her, I feel lifted and invigorated. So I was so happy when she agreed to my Confidence According To… interview.
