I’ve already featured Sari in my blog before but I really felt that her particular flavour of confidence had to be explored and shared so the rest of us can learn from her example. Since photographing Sari a few months ago, she has almost become the face of my brand. I use her image on my business card, I submit it when I’m asked for examples of my work, she’s on the homepage of my website.
She just stands out as an icon of confidence.
So of course I had to ask to feature in my Confidence According To… series.
My mother is an independent strong women but I’m not sure that as a child I valued it as a good or important thing.
What’s the best advice you received to boost your confidence when you were younger?
I don’t believe I received any specific advice, that’s maybe why I wasn’t very confident as a child
Did you ever feel pressure to conform to trends as well as expectations of family and friends?
Yes, not necessarily by my friend, mostly from my family. It made me feel ugly and fat and not very happy – you can probably attribute some of it to “normal” teenage problems. I’m sure there were no bad intentions.
What was the biggest influence on your confidence (good or bad) up to the age of 25?
My confidence started to improve when I started dating my later-to-be husband at the age of 16, he helped me see that I’m beautiful, later in life when we went to university together I realized that I’m not completely useless when it comes to studying. When I gave birth to my first child at the age of 24 I knew I could do it!

What does confidence mean to you?
It’s a complicated one. Most people will tell you that I’m a very confident person that is because they see me as open, talkative and opinionated, always willing to talk in front of people even on some taboo topics. Confidence to me is to keep making other people think I’m confident even in the days that I feel that I’m fat, ugly and stupid. And from experience by the end of the day I feel confident that I’m not fat, not ugly and very clever!
When was a time you felt your most confident?
I usually feel confident when I do things that I love and know. When I’m teaching or selling, that gives me a sense of satisfaction that I’m doing something to the best of my ability.
How do you celebrate yourself on a regular basis?
I love the simple things in life, for me walking the dogs is happy time. I don’t have daily rituals other than my morning coffee and sometimes I buy expensive shoes!
When was a time you did NOT feel confident?
When you asked me to answer these questions about confidence. I took my time, I felt that it will be difficult for me to express myself – that I’m not good enough
What do you do when you need an immediate confidence boost?
My go to person is my husband. As much as I know that he is not objective, he thinks I can do anything and has a way to make me believe him.
What online resources (websites, blogs, forums) boost your confidence?
I don’t look on the internet for inspiration or confidence – I take it from within me.
Do you have any confidence boosting or self love mantras or sayings?
Not much other than ‘love yourself!’ And I know that often its easier said than done
What advice would you give to a girl or woman who clearly has low confidence or low self love?
To try and make small changes in herself starting with the thing that’s bothering her least and moving to the big thing later- one step at a time.
What advice would your 85 year old self give you about your confidence & self love, today?
That I should have always seen that I’m amazing! Till then fake it till you make it!
If you were 5% kinder to yourself, starting tomorrow, what would you start doing differently?
I’ll have the nerve to go and study again (can I get more than 5% for that?)
