Last Friday I experienced one of the most amazing morning’s I can recall. Being a less-than-eager morning riser, I’ve always know that I’m missing out on some magical morning light, but now it’s been confirmed.
It was a challenge waking up in the inky darkness of an Autumn morning, while The Hubs and The Pup continue the adventures of their pillow enveloped slumber.
Sneaking out the door with camera and gear in hand, hoping not to disturb The Hubs and The Pup, meeting Michelle, my assistant, at the car and then driving through the night, amazed by the already busy roads.
We arrived at St James Beach and Samantha & David were already there, taking refuge in their car, while a very brave soul completed his laps of the tidal pool, all before the sun had even hinted at making an appearance.
We made our way down to the beach started with a few warm up shots, just as the sky was beginning to change into something warmer, itself.
There wasn’t a breath of wind, only the soothing sound of the breaking waves on the sand. Slowly we were joined by more early risers, out for their morning walk or meditation, all admiring the beautiful light display that changed almost imperceptibly in front of our eyes. Once the light arrived, it just stayed with us throughout the morning. Never too much, never too little. Just right. Just perfect. As if it knew. A friend had warned me the day before that once the sun was up, it was going to be too harsh to get any decent photos, but the thick line of fog that hung over the see in the distance ensured a lovely diffused light that made the entire shoot feel like something magical.
I know this is a sign of things to come for Samantha and David, who will be getting married later this year. They already seem to have the idyllic life – living in Abu Dhabi and planning their Cape Town wedding. If their engagement shoot is anything to go by, I can’t wait to photograph their wedding in November!
I’m so grateful for having experienced this amazing shoot with two amazing people. It’s the stuff that reignites and re-energises a creative soul – and gets her out of bed early!
