Monica Dart is not only an amazing photographer – she embodies an energy and enthusiasm for life that ripples around her, and ultimately make it’s way back to her to start all over again. At least that’s how I see her. I’ve only met Monica face to face a handful of times, but in those brief encounters I sensed that this was a very special person indeed.

Due to modern times and social media, I’ve been able to follow her beyond our meetings, and her passionate spirit is just as palpable through the Ethernet as it is in real life.

She’s incredibly talented, adventurous and kind hearted. I sense that she’s humble, in touch with who she is and the impact she has on the world around her, and conversely, it’s impact on her.

I read once that no encounter with any person is accidental. Paths cross for very specific reasons, whether we’re aware of them or not. All I can say is that I’m grateful that my path crossed hers. I’ve been inspired and enthralled by her work and have travelled vicariously through her exploration of interesting and unfamiliar countries.

That crazy adventurous, creative, inspiring path of Monica Dart…

1. Something that I’m…
…proud of…
Going back to study when I turned 30 and getting qualified as a fine art photographer.
…desperate to do again…
Lie on my sofa and read a book the entire day without any interruptions.
2. Something I wish…
…I could change…
my attitude and accept that my value system is not the same as someone’s else’s.
3. A lesson…
…I learned, which I’d share, is…
that everyone wants to be heard. Everyone has a story. Stop and make time to listen.
…I wish someone had taught me, is…
that trust has to be earned. Absolutely. Completely.
…I’m still learning, is…
that if actions don’t follow through with words, you may as well throw them to the wind.
4. The ‘someone’ I…
…turn to for advice is…
There isn’t actually one I turn to…it’s several people…depending on the advice I need.
…would return as, in a later life is…
me again, but with the knowledge I know now…so I have a headstart.
…would give my last Rolo to…
my mom.
…would love to be stuck in an elevator with is…
The Dalai Lama….he is one of the most inspiring, humble people on the planet, and I think he could share some food for thought.
…have been most inspired by…
is photographer Cig Harvey. She is an artist and storyteller, and her photos completely resonate with me. She digs deep and gives her images emotions and life.
5. The place I …
…dream of visiting is…
my childhood. There is more I’d like to remember….
…am most happy is…
on an Emirates aeroplane heading somewhere familiar or new. I love the big comfy seats, latest movies, and the excitement of the adventures ahead. Most of all, I love switching off from my day to day life and becoming anonymous.
6. Things that…
…inspire me…
…movies, books, bookstores, walking around Cape Town, tea and people watching in cafes, markets in different countries….travelling. I’m inspired by people who dive into life and really go for an idea or a dream.
…educate me…
travelling…reading….experiences…love…life.
…entertain me…
nights in or out with close friends.
…irritate/challenge me…
when people don’t trust their own judgement and are too influenced by what other people think or want for them.
7. Things that make me go…
…mmmmm….
thinking about the recent summer in Sweden out on the boat. Sitting in my friend Monique’s lounge (In Sweden!) with a glass of wine, our favourite songs playing on Spotify and catching up, laughing and crying together as we always do. Or going online and seeing which country I can visit next…
…ooh la la…
finding the perfect red lipstick….or a sexy pair of jeans.
…yee haa!…
when I know I’m going back to Sweden…and I have to start the countdown.
…WTF?…
people who completely commit to something and then suddenly change their mind. With no conscience.
…lol!…
a really good romantic comedy…a lot of lol mixed with tears = the perfect combination.
8. My reason for…
…getting up in the morning…
is to see what the new day has in store for me.
…smiling is…
knowing God has a plan for me and my life…and that I just need to let go and trust more.
…pursuing my passion is…
that it keeps me fulfilled, inspired and completely buzzing inside.
9. My approach to…
…life is…
moment by moment, day by day. Let life unfold as it should even when there are days I try to control it. Being more present.
…business is…
keeping focussed on one task at a time. Trying not to get too overwhelmed….and finding balance.
…fashion is…
Sexy but comfortable. A good few pairs of jeans that I feel confident in. Feminine dresses that flatter my best parts…and accessories. I buy at least one special item from every new country I visit, so when I wear it, it transports me back there…again and again.
…health and beauty is…
yoga, walking and personal training. Aiming to drink more water everyday. I really don’t enjoy the taste, so I’ve started adding lemon or mint to my jug in the morning.
10. My perfect….
…day starts with…
a cup of tea…
…client is…
one that gives me complete creative freedom to create magic for them.
…hobby is…
reading…going off on long walks on my own….or writing travel stories.
