When I started my business years ago, I remember having a thought – ‘I need to make friends with a lawyer.’

Well, as it does, time goes by, and I find myself living in Cape Town, and wouldn’t you know it, I’ve made friends with a lawyer!!

But not just any lawyer – an amazing lawyer who, rather than scaring the living daylights out of you, has quite the opposite effect. THIS lawyer makes you smile. Nope, correction. She makes you laugh! Out loud!!

It probably sounds like an oxymoron, or some kind of kung-fu name – Crouching Tiger, Laughing Lawyer, but I digress….

Robyn Hey, one of the Directors at HWD Attorneys in Claremont is a phenomenal woman. If I was in anyway inclined to want to get into the field of law, I’d want to be Robyn when I grew up.

What makes Robyn different from other lawyers, aside from her stand-up comedy skills, is that she really does care about the individuals she helps, particularly those who own/run small businesses. Along with the other Directors and Attorneys in her team, you really do get a sense of being in a safe place when you visit them. Plus, its an added bonus that the practice is predominantly female! Girl Power!

So, please, please, please, if you’re self employed, make sure you contact Robyn or anyone at HWD Attorneys and make sure that you get all your legal ducks in a row. And I’m speaking specifically to my fellow photographers – I know how easy it is to let this non-creative stuff slide!!

And in the meantime, get to know a little more about Robyn…

1. Something that I’m…
…proud of…
is the law firm, HWD Attorneys which my partners and I have built over the last 6 years. We offer incredible service and the firm is a great place to work.
…desperate to do again…
I took 3 months off to backpack through Europe and North Africa a few years ago. I’ve decided to do the same in 2017 but this time with money.
…trying to forget…
my perm from the early 90s
…about to change…
I’ve just gone through a period of intense personal and professional change so I’m just catching my breath
2. Something I wish…
…I could try for the first time…
hot air ballooning
…I could change…
I wish I loved vegetables.
…people would…
understand is that lawfulness is everyone’s responsibility not just the police and the courts. Obeying the law starts with the little things that each of us excuse in ourselves but condemn in others.
3. A lesson…
…I learned, which I’d share, is…
just because someone tells you something does not mean it is true. Don’t accept any opinion or situation as true or finite. Ask questions.
…I wish someone had taught me, is…
that how you see the world determines how far you will go.
…I’m still learning, is…
that is can be hard to stand with integrity and courage against adversity but that there is nothing more important.
4. The ‘someone’ I…
…turn to for advice is…
a colleague of mine who has been a supporter of my firm since it opened its doors. He has an incredible ability to tell me hard truths and has been instrumental in my growth as a business owner.
…would return as, in a later life is…
me, only thinner.
…would give my last Rolo to…
my sister who has walked with me through life and makes me laugh.
…would love to be stuck in an elevator with is…
me. I’m an introvert so I’d love the quiet alone time
…have been most inspired by…
Thuli Madonsela who epitomises courage.
5. The place I …
…dream of visiting is…
the Serengeti
…am most happy is…
the ocean
6. Things that…
…inspire me…
words. People’s stories of triumph, failure, happiness and sorrow inspire me.
…entertain me…
anything with stories – books, movies, songs, theatre
…irritate/challenge me…
technology
7. Things that make me go…
…ooh la la…
anything red
…yee haa!…
my work – I love what I do
…lol!…
my team, they crack me up
8. My reason for…
…getting up in the morning…
I am leaving a legacy. I’ve only got a so much time on earth and I want to build into the lives of those that work with me or follow me in life
…smiling is…
the knowledge that everything is ultimately in the hands of the Lord
…pursuing my passion is…
I want to change the way lawyers do law and people see lawyers
9. My approach to…
…life is…
every day is a new day
…business is…
to take calculated risks
...fashion is…
to phone a friend
10. My perfect….
…day starts with…
good coffee
…client is…
someone who invites me into their business to help them achieve their most ambitious business goals
